Why Underlayment Matters for Your New Floor

Finishing a basement is one of the best ways to add living space and comfort in your house. However below-grade spaces come with unique challenges: concrete slabs, moisture and lower temperatures. The wrong floor often causes mold, swelling and costly repairs.

Over the past few years, luxury vinyl plank has become one of the most requested types of flooring in Canada. The reasons are easy to understand: it looks like real wood, it stands up to spills, and it fits most budgets.

Long-term durability is another reason to choose it. Many vinyl planks come with a protective wear layer that resists scuffs and scratches, stains and spills and UV fading. Families with kids and pets value the low maintenance: a quick sweep and occasional damp mopping are usually enough.

So, which one is right for you? If long-term value plus the ability to refinish are what you want, go with real wood. If cost, scratch resistance and easy maintenance come first, laminate makes a lot of sense.

Vinyl plank is widely considered the top option for lower levels. Several LVP collections are water-resistant, meaning they won’t swell or rot if humidity happens. SPC and WPC planks can also bridge slight unevenness in the concrete.

Moisture control is a second major function, particularly in basements. A concrete slab can release moisture vapour constantly, and an underlay with a built-in vapour barrier helps protect wood-based floors from warping.

When shopping for new floors, they usually focus on the colour, style and the price per square foot. But what goes under the floor matters just as much. Quality underlay improves comfort, noise levels and moisture protection, while it helps your new floor last longer.

Warmth and comfort is also important, particularly in Canadian winters. LVP is softer and quieter underfoot than tile or stone, and many collections include a built-in underlay for better sound absorption.

Real hardwood is the classic choice. It brings natural character that no imitation fully matches, and it is often refinished several times during its lifespan. Being able to refinish it allows a hardwood floor will last for decades. Hardwood also boosts resale value in most cities.

Its first role is acoustic insulation. Floors that are not glued down can sound hollow without proper underlayment. A quality underlayment absorbs impact sound, something that is especially useful in apartments and condos where strata rules often set a minimum IIC or STC rating.

When it comes to a classic wood look, two materials almost always top the list: laminate flooring and hardwood. Each of them can look stunning, however they have important differences when it comes to cost, durability and lifespan.

Salt residue often leaves white marks which may etch the surface of hardwood, laminate and vinyl. Remove salt marks promptly with a damp microfibre mop and a cleaner made for your type of floor. Never use steam mops on wood and laminate.

Engineered wood is another option when you prefer real wood. Thanks to its cross-ply structure, engineered wood resists moisture swings much better than solid hardwood, and more tips here solid wood is not recommended on concrete. Always use an appropriate underlay for long-term performance.

Tile stays very water-resistant, though it tends to feel chilly unless install in-floor heating. Carpet, on the other hand, adds comfort yet can absorb humidity, which is why carpet tiles are often a better solution.

Before you buy, be sure to look at samples under your own lights. Finishes can look completely different in natural light. For expert advice and plenty of options of hardwood, laminate and vinyl, visit this Canadian flooring store before you make your final decision.

The right underlay also smooths out minor imperfections beneath the floor while provides a little softness underfoot. Remember, however, that cannot replace proper subfloor preparation: big height differences should be fixed first.

Laminate has evolved significantly. Premium laminate feature detailed photographic layers and textured surfaces that appear remarkably realistic. The wear layer keeps it resistant to scratches, and it is priced less. Many collections also offer water-resistant cores.

The main benefit of luxury vinyl is its resistance to moisture. Unlike natural wood, a quality vinyl plank does not swell or cup after contact with moisture. That makes it an excellent choice for kitchens, bathrooms and basements.

To start, what exactly is underlayment? Underlayment is a thin cushioned layer installed over the subfloor and under the floor. Depending on the product, it can be made of rubber or equipped with a plastic film.

The first step is to think about the purpose of each room. A high-traffic hallway requires something tough and easy to clean, whereas a master bedroom can prioritize comfort and warmth. Kitchens and bathrooms work best with waterproof materials such as vinyl plank or tile.

Before anything else, test for moisture in your basement. A basic moisture test like taping a square of plastic to the floor for a day or two will indicate whether moisture comes through. Address any leaks before installing new flooring.
